Lots of fun and fish at Community Policing derby

by Anita Locke

Smith-Ennismore Community Policing hosted its 13th annual fishing derby at BEL Rotary Park at the end of the Bridgenorth Causeway last Saturday.

Despite what had threatened to be bad weather, the skies cleared by the time the event got underway, and a large group of children under the age of 12, and their parents, had a great time catching fish and spending quality time together.

There were plenty of great prizes and food to go around. The top prize, for the child who accumulated the most fish weight, was a brand new bicycle.

Every child who participated in the derby received a prize as well. Most of the prizes were donated by local merchants.

Children ran quickly to the weigh-station to have their catch weighed before heading back to the shore to try to catch more fish. At noon, the weights were tallied and the winners were announced.

Carp and bass were not allowed; from time to time however, carp could be seen stirring up the waters close to shore, no doubt adding to the excitement of the children and their parents.
