Open House on road closing proposal

Members of the public are invited to attend a public open house on Wednesday, July 30 at 7:00 p.m. regarding a request to declare a portion of the unopened road allowance on the 18th Line of Smith as surplus to the Township’s needs.

Council is hosting the meeting to obtain feedback from ratepayers who may be affected by the closure of the unopened road allowance.

The portion of the road allowance under consideration is adjacent to Buckhorn Lake, and Council has a policy of not disposing of road allowances which lead to the water.

The 18th line from County Road 23 to Buckhorn Lake is entirely unopened.

Brent and Letty Steranko have requested that Council consider declaring a portion of the unopened road allowance that lies within their property as surplus to the Township’s needs.

The constructed roads leading to the property (Fire Route 19 and Buckhorn Lane) are privately owned rights of way, i.e. there are no opened public roads to provide access to the property.

The Sterankos are proposing to develop the property and the ownership of the unopened road allowance impacts on how it can potentially be developed.

The meeting will take place in the Township of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield Council Chambers, 1310 Centre Line.
