Waves of Hope will pay a visit to Lakefield

by Anita Locke

Waves of Hope (WOH) will be making a stop in Lakefield on Friday, August 1.

WOH is a fundraising concept which primarily involves the water-skiing community of Ontario and its efforts to raise money for cancer research.

The Curtis family, comprised of John, his wife Karen, their children Andy and Morgan, and a support crew will be water skiing the entire length of the Trent Severn and Rideau Waterways (from Muskoka to Ottawa) between July 20 and August 9, a distance of 880 kilometers.

The Curtis family is raising money for cancer research because the immediate family has had to deal with cancer this year. Karen’s mother and sister were diagnosed with cancer.

Karen says, “I hope to raise money through this waterski journey as a family to support cancer research so that hopefully a cure can be found to this devastating disease that affects so many.”

Events in Lakefield (Friday, August 1) include a Pledge Pass at Lakefield College School from noon to 4:00, and pledge pass for Big Brothers and Big Sisters at 4:00 p.m. (departing from Lakefield Marina).

A dance, featuring the four-piece band “Afterthought” will begin at 9:00 p.m. at the Lakefield Legion. Admission is by donation.

Proceeds from the journey will be donated to Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation and the Tim Horton’s Children’s Foundation.

Their stop in Lakefield will also see a portion of the proceeds of the day’s events being donated to the Lakefield Primary Health Care Centre campaign.

August 9 will be Buckeye Marine’s World on the Water Day. This event will be commemorated by a large granite monument which will be located near the shore of Buckhorn Lake. The cost of having your name inscribed on the monument is included in your donation.
