Forest conservation in SEL

by Simon Conolly

Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield needs a Forest Conservation bylaw, Steve Russell, a Buckhorn cottager told Council Tuesday evening.

Mr. Russell said a large number of trees had been cut on land adjoining his property just south of the Buckhorn Foodland.

Mr. Russell had done some research, and presented council with a map showing which areas of the province have bylaws in place.

He said they are normally enacted by the upper tier government, and SEL may have to enlist Peterborough County’s support.

Bylaws are in place in Haliburton and Northumberland Counties, he said.

Mr. Russell’s presentation received a warm reception, with Council asking staff to bring forward a report on the issue.
