GCH toasts library volunteers

by Simon Conolly

The 40 volunteers who work in the Galway-Cavendish and Harvey Township library system were treated to lunch last Friday at the Cody Inn in Buckhorn.

About 15 volunteers work in the two library branches – Buckhorn and Cavendish – with the remainder looking after the Good Buy Room in the lower level of the Buckhorn Library.

Offering affordable deals on gently used clothing, the Good Buy Room generates between $20,000 and $25,000 annually to support library operations.

The library’s collection of books is supplemented with a special collection of large print books, and interlibrary loans are available if a title is not available in the branch.

The library also offers magazines, videos and DVDs, audio casettes and CDs.

You can check the library catalogue online at www.galwaycavendishharveylibrary.ca, and also reserve books online.

The internet has become an important part of the library operation, with wireless broadband connections available in both branches.

The service has proven popular with cottagers in the area who miss their high speed internet connections.

Library membership is free to township residents, and non-residents can join by paying a $10 per year per family fee.

In the summer, the Buckhorn branch is open 10 to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday; and 10 to 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

The Helen Bowen branch in the Cavendish Community Hall is open Wednesday and Saturday 10 to 4:00 p.m.

And, if you’re interested in joining a busy crew, the library is looking for more volunteers.
