Whetung Family history topic at Lakefield Historical Society

The Lakefield Historical Society is proud to present “The Whetung Family History” on Thursday, March 26 at 7 p.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church (Queen & Regent Streets), Lakefield.

Mae Whetung, daughter of the late Bill and Margery Whetung, will present a family photo album and history.

The presentation covers seven generations in the Whetung family. From its roots in the Curve Lake community, First Nations historic contexts are given in this family portrait, as well as memories of life growing up in Lakefield.

Mae’s father Bill was well known for his contributions in the native and non-native community.

He was active in public life, including School Board, Fleming College and other organizations, and operated the Lakefield Chick Hatchery from the 1940s to the late 1960s.

Mae currently lives in Curve Lake and enjoys historic research. She is the author of “The History of the Ojibwa of the Curve Lake Reserve and Surrounding Area”.

Lakefield Historical Society President, Michael Townsend, states, “We are so fortunate to have the opportunity to learn about the history of the Whetung Family in our community. We look forward to this very special evening.”

Everyone is welcome! Refreshments will be served. For more information, please call 652-7874.
