Volunteers, donations boost the SEL library
by Simon Conolly
Volunteers came in for special mention in Dr. Glenn Sullivan’s annual report to council on the Smith-Enismore-Lakefield library system.
The volunteer-operated Renewed Classics and The Thrift Shop raised $26,579, and 995 items were loaned and 619 borrowed through the Inter-Library Loan program.
Book sales raised $7,788, and the libraries were open 90 hours per week, six days a week.
During that time, volunteers checked out and returned to the shelves 127,028 items for over 45,000 people.
The library system operated on a $396,477 budget in 2008, with $254,027 coming from the township.
Provincial and federal funding added $49,924, and library fees contributed $19,601.
Among the highlights of the year referred to by Dr. Sullivan were a $175,000 donation from the Chemong Lions Club to help furnish the new Bridgenorth library, and a $200,000 bequest to the Lakefield library from the estate of John D. Grylls.
