‘Pirates’ of the Trent Severn

by Anita Locke

The “Pirates of the Trent” made their way down the Trent Severn from Buckhorn on Monday on their journey to Peterborough in time for July 1 festivities there.

The group is made up of seven couples, the majority of whom who reside on Big Bald Lake in Buckhorn, and Bobcaygeon.

Each year for the past four years, inspired by the movie “The Pirates of the Caribbean” they have donned pirate costumes, bringing much joy and laughter to people along the waterway.

Couples include Jim and Sue Torrance, Nancy and Bill Jones, Dar and Mike Chapman, Bev and John Balenko, Ann and Dunc Brown, Rhonda and Carson Manning, and Rob and Betty Wood.

Along the route, they stop at the locks and, on this particular day, at the Lakefield Marina, where they sing, dance, hand out trinkets and silver coins to children, and generally “try to make people happy.”

Nancy Jones, who came up with the idea four years ago, said, “We’re all professional people and this allows us to become children again.”

If you’re lucky, you might even get to hear their “Singing Elvis” sing a tune or two, and chat you up a bit.
