Concerns over DD ATV trail

by Terry McQuitty

Another voice was heard in regard to the planning process for the proposed ATV trail to be developed in Douro-Dummer Township.

Joe and Iris Crawford appeared before Douro-Dummer council on Tuesday evening to request that they be included in the planning process of the trail.

The Crawfords live on Hannon Road (commonly known as Beer Bottle Road) which is part of the proposed trail, and have experienced difficulties in the past with snowmobilers and ATV riders.

The Crawfords stated that snowmobiles run the road at very high speeds causing a safety hazard as well as a noise problem. The Crawford’s concern with ATVs is that they cause damage to the terrain.

Councillor Tom Watt sits on the steering committee for the trail and explained that there was a plan in place for members of the committee to meet with the Crawfords to explain the plan and seek input.

Joe Crawford said, “Even though the trail is still proposed we would like to see the plan sooner rather than later.”

Deputy Reeve Karl Moher explained that he was initially opposed to any use of ATVs on township roads, but has changed his mind because the use of these vehicles is growing so fast that there has to be a plan in place.

The trick is to find balance and that is the process the township is taking presently.

Moher went on to state that this will be a public process and input from everyone concerned will be considered.
