Environment Committee gearing up in GCH
by Peter Raymond
The Township of Galway-Cavendish and Harvey council proposed the formation of an Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC), in the Spring of 2009.
During the Spring/Summer of 2009 volunteers were solicited and the first meeting was held in September.
The Committee is made up of seven members from across the Township including one council member, Peter Franzen, and a representative from Kawartha Region Conservation Authority.
The first two meetings held in September and October were used to brainstorm ideas and establish the Committee’s initial focus areas. They are as follows:
• Waste Management – Reduce, Re-use, Recycle;
• Develop/promote environmental awareness with local ratepayer/cottage groups;
• Create and leverage website for sharing of information and awareness.
The EAC chairperson attended the Township Economic Development Committee in November and received full support of the Committee to promote, encourage and support environmentally sustainable business ventures and opportunities that come before their Committee.
The EAC Committee is participating in its first public event at the upcoming Heritage Day being held at Buckhorn Community Centre on February 20.
EAC will share a booth with Peterborough County – Environmental Services and we will be providing information on waste diversion solutions available to ratepayers to reduce their carbon footprint. We look forward to meeting visitors at this excellent event.
We all have a responsibility when it comes to caring for the environment. We hope that through our committee’s efforts and with the community’s support, we can make a difference by working towards a sustainable environment across the Township.
