Kite-powered skiing, boarding on Rice Lake
by Anita Locke
Wildrock Outfitters held a snow kite-boarding event at Elmhirst’s Resort in Keene last weekend (January 29-31).
Temperatures ranged in the minus teens (celsius) with windchill but the sky was clear and blue.
Kiteboarding, or snowkiting as it is also known, is fast becoming a popular sport with those who don’t want to share the snow or make tracks with a crowd.
On any windy day kiteboarders can be seen zigzagging across Rice Lake in front of the resort. The kites are secured to the waist and after a few lessons participants can snowboard, ski or sled by kitepower.
The event featured demos, lessons and a swap meet for snowkite enthusiasts, beginners and those interested in learning more.
