Nordic Ski Club groomer will work the Olympics
by Anita Locke
Dave Woodfine, one of the owners of Wildrock Outfitters in Peterborough, will soon be heading to the Olympics in Vancouver.
He’s one of a team of 11 people who will be doing trail grooming for the cross-country skiing competitions which will see athletes from around the world vying for medals.
He has been a longtime volunteer with the Kawartha Nordic Ski Club located at Haultain north of Woodview, and says he’s really looking forward to playing a role at the Olympics.
The machine he will be driving to groom the trails, a Pisten Bully 400, is much larger than what he’s used to. It measures 15 feet wide and 30 feet wide.
He received training on the machine at Harwood Hills, and also travelled to Vancouver in March, 2009 as well as January of this year.
He credits his affiliation with the Kawartha Nordic Ski Club (KNSC) as one of the reasons he wanted to be part of the Olympic trail grooming experience. A few years ago the Trillium Foundation provided funds for the purchase of a smaller trail groomer for the KNSC.
The club also gets great support from Haultain Service, which services the equipment and does a lot of the grooming of the KNSC trails.
He says, “The experience I receive at the Olympics will be invaluable, and I plan on bringing that knowledge back to my work at the KNSC.”
