Scouts seek memorabilia for 100th anniversary
by Anita Locke
The 1st Lakefield Sea Scouts is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2011, and is requesting the community’s assistance in compiling memorabilia, photos and stories from those who have been part of the Lakefield Scouting movement over the years.
The group hopes to put together an extensive collection during 2010 so that when the centenary celebrations occur in 2011 they will have a nice display.
As part of their centenary celebrations, they hope to have a number of special events in 2011, including a regatta.
The club has always enjoyed close relationships with local organizations including the Lakefield Lions (their sponsor), local veterans, the Lakefield Legion (1st Lakefield Sea Scouts assist with poppy sales) and Remembrance Day.
For the past several years the group has also helped with parking during the Jazz Festival, provided safety boats at the Ennismore triathlon, and has assisted with PolarFest both as volunteers and polar plunge participants.
The group received its original charter as land-oriented Boy Scouts in 1911 with the formation of the Loon Patrol.
Following the Second World War in 1946, 1st Lakefield embraced Sea Scouting.
1st Lakefield Sea Scouts believe there are stories, photos, old uniforms and other memorabilia out there that shouldn’t stay lost.
If you, or someone you know, has been involved with the 1st Lakefield Sea Scouts at some point in the past, and have items that could be loaned to the archival committee for cataloging it would be greatly appreciated.
