Antique and flower show and sale August 11,12
The Lakefield and District Horticultural Society presents the 32nd annual Antique and Flower Show and Sale on August 11 and 12 at the Lakefield Smith Community Arena.
Billed as a “Festival of flowers and antiques”, the flower show is an opportunity for members of the Society to present beautiful specimen flowers, arrangements and favorite plants.
The Antique Show hosts close to 40 unique antique dealers with items for sale.
The displays of flowers and antiques get better and better each year; this year will be no different.
Gardeners have been gearing up for this show since they started looking at seed catalogues back in January.
By the time the Horticultural Society’s Yearbook comes out in February, members make sure that their seed and plant selections fit into the categories listed in the yearbook
Each year the categories and listing of plants to show varies, so enthusiastic members make sure that what is listed in the show schedule will be growing in their garden come August.
“The more entries you have, the more chances you have to win prizes!” says Norma Walker, Horticultural Society President.
“The biggest concern is the weather. If it rains heavily or we have strong winds in the days leading up to the show, members have to wait to see what damage may have been done, and hope that the best flowers have been spared,” says Brenda Ibey, Vice-President.
Mike Dean, convenor for the antique show, begins contacting antique dealers in January.
“Many of our dealers come back year after year, but I also try to find different dealers so we can keep the event fresh,” says Mike.
“This year again we have a few new dealers including one who re-canes old wicker chairs!”
Close to 40 antique dealers fill out the flower show, with a variety of wares. Not only are local antique shops well represented, but dealers from outside the area also make the trek annually.
This year the show will include various memorabilia, collectibles, furniture, tools, linens, jewellery, silverware, glassware and more – this antique show covers it all.
The Lakefield Horticultural Society Antique Sale and Flower Show is always a huge success. It is very popular with the public, and is the primary fundraiser of the Society.
The event, now in its 32nd year, has allowed the Horticultural Society to continue its important and sometimes costly volunteer projects in the Village of Lakefield.
The show is held in the second week of August each year at the Lakefield-Smith Community Centre.
The Antique and Flower Show and Sale will be held Wednesday, August 11, 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Thursday, August 12, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $4.
