Five generations on Buckhorn Lake
In 1958 Herb Baufeldt and his wife Willard bought an unfinished waterfront cabin on Buckhorn Lane and with the help of their family turned it into the family’s summer retreat.
As the years passed it was only their daughter Lois Howieson and her husband David who spent most of the summer on Buckhorn Lake with their children Randy and Kathy.
Their kids and their pals liked to sit on a chair fixed to a washing machine lid tied to a motor boat skidding over the lake.
When tiring of this sport they would paddle their canoes back and forth through the locks.
Kathy had much more exciting entertainment. She would walk across the lake on the safety cable just above the dam. Being a modest girl she didn’t advise her parents of this talent.
In 1981 Herb and Willard, who had winterised their cottage decided to move to Waterloo where they were closer to their childhood neighbourhood, medical care and shopping, but they did still spend a great deal of time at the cottage.
In 1987 Lois and David bought the cottage, took it down and built a more comfortable year round house. The family continues to spend time at the ‘family seat’.
Herb died in 1991 and Willard moved to Peterbourough Manor. Needing more care last year she moved to Allison where her son Jim visits her daily. Lois calls daily and visits monthly.
In 2006 Dave Howieson died and in 2008 Lois married Glenn Hadley (who had been a widower for 12 years) and sold him half of the house.
Glenn’s great grandfather and grandfather lived in Hadlington, a ghost town south of Tory Hill.
Lois and Glenn will remain on the shore of Upper Buckhorn honoring Herb and Willard Baufeldt and so the 26 members of the Howieson/Hadley family may learn where they came from.
