Ron Millen seeking re-election as SEL Reeve
Ron Millen is running for re-election as Reeve in the Township of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield.
Deputy Reeve Mary Smith is also running for the position of Reeve.
Mr. Millen has served on council for 16 years with terms as Councillor, Deputy-Reeve, Reeve and County Warden.
Many voters have encouraged Mr. Millen to seek another term, he said, to continue the cost effective and progressive government which SEL has enjoyed while maintaining a reasonable level of property taxes.
Mr. Millen believes it is important to keep property taxes under control so that we can afford to live in this township.
When amalgamation occurred, the Lakefield tax level was three times that of Smith-Ennismore. This proved to be unsustainable.
Mr. Millen wants to provide the kind of leadership which will not move us in the direction of higher taxes in Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield.
Mr. Millen also wants to maintain the township form of government.
While on Lakefield council, Mary Smith wanted the province to eliminate township councils in Peterborough County.
Mr. Millen believes that bigger is not necessarily better, but it is certainly more expensive.
Mr. Millen has been married to his wife Cathy for 30 years. They have two sons, David and Jason and a daughter-in-law Sarah.
With the help of his family and two employees, he currently operates a successful family dairy farm.
He is a former economic consultant in the telecommunications and energy industries. His educational background includes a Phd. in economics.
He is a former Chair of the Otonabee Conservation Authority, the Peterborough County City Health Unit and the Peterborough Agricultural Advisory Committee.
He has also been on the board of the Peterborough Housing Authority and the Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Committee.
In addition, he has served on several agricultural organizations.
Mr. Millen looks forward to meeting as many residents as possible to hear their concerns. He can be contacted by calling (705) 292-5144 or by email at rmillen@bell.net
