Price for Ennismore recreation centre could be $7.8 million
by Simon Conolly
The total bill for the proposed upgrade to the Robert E. Young Recreation Centre in Ennismore could reach $7.8 million.
That would include a new arena to replace the existing 40-year-old facility.
A study will be undertaken this year, at a cost of $10,800, to determine the life expectancy of the arena.
Without a new arena, the total project cost is estimated at $4.3 million.
The work would be done in two phases, with the Phase I price tag set at $2.1 million.
Work would include new dressing rooms, an improved lobby and concession area, development of universally accessible washrooms, an upgrade to the upper level to provide an attractive meeting and program space, and installation of an elevator to provide access to that space.
Phase 2 would cost $2.2 million without a new arena, or $5.7 million if it was included.
That phase would include a new large gymnasium type multi-purpose space, a climbing wall and a kitchen.
The gymnasium could be partitioned and used for banquets or other rental events.
A splash pad could be included to facilitate summer day camp programs.
The Ennismore Community Centre Renovation Project Committee has had discussions with the Peterborough YMCA regarding development of a partnership in which the YMCA would provide programming services.
Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield Township had previously committed $1.5 million to the project.
A further $900,000 will be allocated from the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund over 2011 and 2012.
That commitment means a planned expansion of the Public Works garage on the Centre Line of Smith will be delayed a few years.
A public fundraising campaign is planned to help finance Phase 2 of the project.
