Edible, medicinal plants on Horticultural Society agenda

The next monthly meeting of the Lakefield Horticultural Society will be held on September 14, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Marshland Centre in Lakefield.

The guest speaker is Sher Letooze; she will be making a presentation on edible and medicinal wild plants.

She has been studying wild plants for well over 30 years. She began using them as a food source, then branched into medicinal uses, and now uses them for dyeing as well.

“Mother Nature has given us a whole range of wonderful plants to use in our daily lives,” she says, and she will share some of these plants and their uses with you.

For instance, do you have a tired shirt or blouse that could use some new life? Why not dye it with the spent daylily flowers in your garden. She will show you how to do it.

She has also written three books about these subjects.

The Mini Flower Show for the meeting will be dahlias, asters, lilies, zinnias and roses.

The Decorative Competition is “Summer Harvest”, a design using a gourd or squash as a container.

Mark your calendars now for the following month’s meeting which will be held on October 12. David Tomlinson of Merlin’s Garden will be making a presentation on A Magical Garden.

David is a British Horticulturalist, trained at the Royal Botanical Gardens in England. He came to Canada 30 years ago and has worked as a landscape consultant in Ontario.

He has become involved extensively in ecological and environmental issues. He will be presenting his magical garden in Aurora, which is many gardens within a garden with over 2,500 different plants.

The Lakefield and District Horticultural Society is a non-profit group which raises funds through its annual Antique and Flower show to beautify the village of Lakefield and to bring speakers to monthly meetings.
