First place Chiefs get revenge with 7-3 win over Clarington
by Jim Carson
After performing what may have been the worst game of the year for the Lakefield Chiefs in Clarington last Sunday, suffering a 5-0 loss, the Chiefs responded with revenge Tuesday at home with a convincing 7-3 win against the Eagles.
In Clarington, the Eagles totally dominated the 60 minutes, out-shooting Lakefield 28-19 in a game in which Head Coach Rod Taylor called a meltdown for his team. “ We never competed from the drop of the puck. We weren’t ready and it was a total team letdown. We had scored 32 goals in our last five games in which we won, so maybe we thought we were better than what we are. It was a lesson we learned because we turned the table around at home.”
That home game was a convincing 7-3 victory giving the Chiefs their 24th win of the season against 9 losses and 3 overtime defeats for 51 points and a seven point cushion over the second place Little Britain Merchants.
Defenceman and Flannigans Butcher Player of the Game Conner Blair led the way for Lakefield with two goals and one assist. Jordan Walsh also had two goals while singles went to Kyle Sullivan, Travis Brault and Stephen Woodbeck. Brad Sutton faced 19 Eagle shots while Lakefield registered 28 at the Eagles netminder.
The Chiefs travel to Uxbridge Friday night and will face the third place Port Perry MoJacks at home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Lakefield will finish the regular schedule with back to back games with Little Britain, travelling to Woodville on February 5 and back home on February 7. The two top teams in the league will get a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
