Chiefs clinch first place

by Jim Carson

The Lakefield Chiefs clinched first place in the Central Ontario Jr. “C” league last week with two key victories.

The Chiefs defeated the Uxbridge Bruins Friday night 5-4 and clinched first place Tuesday at home against the third place Port Perry MoJacks with a 7-3 win.

It is the first time since the 2007-08 season that Lakefield has finished first in their division. Lakefield will complete their schedule with back to back games against the second place Little Britain Merchants starting in Woodville on Sunday at 2 p.m. and finish at home Tuesday with a 7:30 start.

Port Perry sits in third spot and cannot catch the Merchants, so both Lakefield and Little Britain will get a bye in the first round of the playoffs while the four remaining teams will play a best three out of five series which has to be concluded by February 21.

In Lakefield Tuesday night Port Perry scored at the 34 second mark to take their only lead of the game. The Chiefs blew the game open with 14 minutes left in the third period scoring three times in that span.

The league’s leading scorer Kyle Sullivan scored twice, with singles going to Connor Blair, Mike Madgett, Tyler Roy, Riley Campbell and Curtis Bolton. Captain Nathan Larson picked up two assists and was named the Flannigans Butcher Shop Player of the Game.

Assistant Coach Mike Coons said that although they have first place wrapped up they would take these last two games as seriously as the first 38.

“We know what we have to do from here on in. These two games and every practice has to be at high intensity to stay sharp until playoffs. It’s nice to finish first, but we are after something greater,” said Coons.

The Chiefs record stands at 26 wins, 9 losses and 3 overtime defeats for 55 points. At Tuesday’s home game the Chiefs will honour their family with a member of their family wearing a Chiefs away sweater and a special surprise for their mothers.
