The world’s fastest speed skating oval

Betsy McGregor recently met with the hosts of the Junior World Cup Speed Skating Championships in the Italian Alps and extended official greetings from the Ontario Speed Skating Oval being built here in Lakefield.

Thirteen nations participated in World Cup events across the week-end of January 28 and 29 at the Oval in Ritten, Italy, on what is regarded as one of the fastest oval ice surfaces in the world.

Ritten Sport and Renault Trucks are joint sponsors of an elite professional hockey team in the adjacent indoor arena where Betsy’s son, Mac Faulkner, is playing hockey this Winter.

The Ontario Speed Skating Oval (OSSO) is a non-profit organization mandated to build Ontario’s first 400 m temperature controlled, outdoor speed skating oval with an adjacent multi-purpose community use building.

The Oval will be the provincial home of speed skating and house the offices of the Ontario Speed Skating Association (OSSA).

Speed Skating Canada has designated the Oval as a Regional Training and Development Centre for its programming. As the Regional Training Centre for Ontario and Eastern Canada, the Oval will help Canada reach its Olympic goals in the future.

The Ontario Speed Skating Oval is hosting Public Skating hours on Sundays between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. throughout February. For the full event schedule visit: www.ontariospeedskatingoval.com or email info@ontariospeedskatingoval.ca.
