Lorax spotted in Cenotaph Park
by Jennie MacKenzie
Sculptors once again invaded Cenotaph Park in Lakefield for the 9th annual Polar Bear Ice Sculpture Competition sponsored by Lakefield Village Merchants.
In their wake, they left behind a delightful collection of Dr. Suess characters, Horton, the Grinch, One Fish, Two Fish, the Lorax and of course, the Cat in the Hat.
Many members of the community who came out to enjoy watching the sculptors cast their votes in the People’s Choice Competition which ultimately saw the 2012 winner, Fred Marquina of Toronto, retain his title for his Dancing Cat in the Hat sculpture.
Second place was captured by Chef Dave Hawey of Peterborough for his Horton, Cat in the Hat and Grinch trio and third place was taken by Lakefield’s own Chef Brian Henry who sculpted the Lorax.
All of the 10 sculptors competing commented on how much they enjoyed the event and the people of Lakefield and voiced their intention to return next year.
The Lakefield Ice Event also continued the Children’s Li’l Chippers Competition and Igloo Island Play areas.
In the Li’l Chippers Competition children are invited to sculpt or create with ice blocks provided especially for them. They are allowed to use tools brought from home as long as they are accompanied by an adult.
First place in this year’s competition went to Liam who sculpted a fish, second place to Maykay for creating a chair and third place to Grace and Rosaleen with their sculpture of Nero. Congratulations to all the children for their terrific sculptures.
This year we also had the addition of a centrepiece, Ice Throne, which was created for us by Mike Muli of Ice Carving Events, the company which also supplies our ice. The public is welcome to climb up and sit in the chair for photos.
Organizers Jennie MacKenzie of Lakefield Pantry and Chef Brian Henry – Personal Chef Services were both pleased with how the event was run.
“It was a chilly day, but still the people of the community came out to enjoy the event and let us know how much they appreciated our work. We couldn’t do this without all of the support we get from the Lakefield business community. We ask everyone to please see the ad in this paper listing all of the sponsors, make a point of thanking them and supporting them in return with your business.”
