Happy Gilmours win the PolarFest Polar Paddle

by Jennie MacKenzie

On a chilly Saturday afternoon, five teams took to the streets of Lakefield for the 4th annual Lakefield Pantry Polar Paddle Canoe Races.

In this event canoes are placed on a wheeled frame and teams of six people manoeuvre the vehicles down Queen Street from Reid to Burnham Street.

The canoes race two teams at a time with the fastest competitors advancing to the next round. Once a team loses twice, they are eliminated from competition.

The day began with the Selwyn Firefighters taking on the Stuffers (of Stuff Store); followed by the Happy Gilmores vs. the SSFC Starving Chefs. Kawartha Home Hardware returned to defend their title from last year.

After several rounds of competition, the final run came down to the 2012 Champion, Kawartha Home Hardware against the challenging Happy Gilmores. In a very tight race, the Happy Gilmores took the Lakefield Pantry trophy and finished the day with an impressive 5 and 0 record.

The Happy Gilmores were sponsored by Donoghue’s Wholesale and team members were Darryl Donoghue, Trevor Moore, Jeff Smith, Gary Donoghue, Chris Butcher and Frank Heffernan.

Organizer Jennie MacKenzie of Lakefield Pantry commented, “I am very impressed with the level of competition and enthusiasm shown by the participants and I thank them all very much for coming out. I hope next year we can encourage more of the community, sports teams and media to come out and compete and perhaps double the number of entries.

“A big thank you to the Selwyn Firefighters who came out early and spent some time with children who came out early to meet them and take pictures with them.”

The winners of the MacKenzie Woodworks Best Costume trophy were the Stuffers team who were dressed as various jungle animals and made a definite impression running down the street.

Team members were Nick Exton, Jay Lehman, Richard Fisk, Sharon Fisk, Jasmine Fisk and Rebecca Fisk.

Many thanks to all of the volunteers who helped keep the day under control and to the Lakefield businesses who generously sponsored the event.
