OFSAA tournament will impact the community

by Vanessa Stark

The Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) 2013 Girls’ A Volleyball Championships will be hosted by Lakefield District Secondary School (LDSS) on March 3-6.

The four locations for this event will be LDSS, Lakefield College School, Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School and Trent University.

Over these three days the community should see many new faces, as 20 teams from all over the province will be checking into the Village Inn.

As well as our local stores and businesses should see an increase in business with the visitors for the OFSAA Championship coming into the community.

Together the community has raised $8,500 for this event. Gold and Silver sponsors include Gastle and Associates, Trent Excalibur, Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, Trent Health in Motion, SGS and Ellwood Hamilton Bus lines.

“In addition to the gold and silver sponsors there are dozens of other businesses and individuals who have contributed,” said LDSS coach and tournament convener Don McCrory. He would also like to give a special thanks to Sue Bell-Gastle for all her hard work with the fundraising committee.

The team has been preparing for OFSAA all season through exhibition games with two left against Trinity College and Lakefield College. They have had two tournaments over the season and won one.

Lauralee Greenlaw, co-captain of the Girls Volleyball team at LDSS with Nicole Gastle says, “Having OFSAA at our school just makes it that much more awesome. I don’t think it would have made me push harder or try harder to win. But it’s just cool to have your friends and family and the community watching that would make it more special.”

OFSAA is truly a big community event. It has given many local businesses and individuals the opportunity to come together and help support the event and our community.

It will bring in business not only for the Village Inn where the competitors will be staying but for all local businesses and the schools taking part in the Championships.
