Uncertainty continues at Nogies Creek cemetery

by James Bradford

Nogies Creek Cemetery is again under scrutiny. Councillor Don LaCombe was eager to put forth a motion to close the file on the issue during Tuesday’s meeting of Trent Lakes council.

There is an area outside the boundary of the cemetery fence that could contain remains.

The proposal is to excavate an area that will be marked in the future to test for remains. This would carry an estimated cost of $3,000.

If there are in fact remains, Police or coroner and the Registrar of Cemeteries would have to be notified immediately, according to documentation provided for council referencing related laws.

Council has not heard from the person they were consulting with about the project recently.

Just as the motion to close the file was being voted on Chief Building Official Mike Zimmer asked council to reconsider. “If we find something, we deal with it, if not, it’s been dealt with,” he said.

Zimmer also pointed out that this is an issue that has been going on for a long period and has been costly. According to documentation provided to council the process has cost almost $25,000.

Council then approved the $3,000 for the test excavation.
