Learn about bees
The Lakefield Horticultural Society is pleased to announce the speaker for its next meeting.
Susan Chan will be speaking on the all important topic of “Bees”, Tuesday, September 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Marshland Centre in Lakefield.
Bees are small but mighty pollinators that are responsible for one out of every three bites of food you take, says Susan Chan.
She’s a pollination biologist for Farms At Work, an independent, not-for-profit organization promoting healthy and active farmlands in central east Ontario.
She’s hard at work to make sure our native bees, already declining in numbers, don’t disappear.
With managed non-native honeybee hives and native bumblebee populations hit hard by diseases, parasites, insecticides and poor overwintering, native bees play an increasingly important role in pollinating our crops.
Another “mini-show” will feature dahlias, asters, lilies, zinnias, and roses, and the decorative theme is “Autumn Tapestry” – a mass design.
