Mike Towns launches new book
by Jaclyn Witherly
Michael Towns was a guest speaker and did a reading of his newly finished book, While Mindin’ the Store at the annual Smith-Ennismore Historical Society dinner on Thursday September 19.
His publication is about the history of Douro and has 650 colourful pictures, dating decades back.
He grew up in the P.G. Towns general store in Douro, which his family has run since 1892, and he spent the first 60 years of his life there.
He said it, “provided the greatest opportunity to get to know thousands of people on a first name basis.”
According to Mike Towns his book is, “a collection of stories and memories based on contributions of many members of the community during countless chats, along with my perspective, living and working a lifetime in Douro.”
Towns said his father had an interest in documenting history and left behind a lot of information which was very helpful.
The book took eight years to complete and it is his first publication. He is aiming to unveil it at the end of October, at the P.G. Towns store, where it will be sold.
“I hope people gain an appreciation for the community we grew up in,” Towns said, “and I hope it will encourage some to pay attention to their own history and write things down.”
He said many people helped him with the book by sending in old photographs and telling old stories.
“Having spent my life in the store, I think that there was nothing that I could have got satisfaction from more than storekeeping in Douro,” Towns said. “The more I travelled, the more I appreciated home.”
