K of C hopes for snow for Family Fun Day Jan. 26
by Ben Clarke
With unusually warm weather the past week, time is running out to get you winter wonderland fix.
With this in mind, Peterborough County Knights of Columbus chapters are teaming up to host a Family Fun Day at a Douro farm Sunday, Jan. 26.
“We’re trying to put on our best event ever,” says co-organizer Peter Leahy.
“We have more people involved this year and more volunteers so it should be a great event.”
Merrylynd Farm, located at 3010 Highway 28 (one mile north of Douro Arena), will be open from 1-4 p.m., and is free of charge, but donations will be accepted.
Fifteen teams of horses will be brought in for sleigh rides down to the event’s site, while toboggan, ice skating, shinny and a food booth will also be available.
Although admission into the farm is free, organizers will be collecting donations and sales from the food booth will go to Casa de Angelae.
Casa De Angelae (Home of Angels) provides a permanent home for women with developmental disabilities, allowing them to live in a safe, supportive, family environment.
“We try and pick a fundraiser that benefits the community,” says Leahy.
“The past two years we have had to cancel the event due to weather so we hope we can get a good turnout this year.”
The annual event began in 1967 as a sleigh ride for girls before the Knights of Columbus organization took it over. Although the event was cancelled the past two years due to weather, the organization hopes to continue the event on an annual basis.
“This might be the only time people will get to do this type of thing all year,” Leahy said with a chuckle.
