Polar Paddle Canoe Races heating up

by Jennie MacKenzie

Competition is flaring for the 5th Annual Lakefield Pantry Polar Paddle Canoe Races.

Last year’s overall winner, The Happy Gilmours, and Best Costume winner, Stuff Store, have both confirmed they will be returning to defend their titles.

Crowd favourites, the Selwyn Volunteer Firefighters will be back and rumours are flying about from various retailers, schools and hockey teams about their intentions to vie for the trophies.

In this fun event, teams of six people will push canoes down Queen Street in Lakefield. The competition is run in a double elimination type format until one team wins overall.

Canoes are provided by the organizer, Lakefield Pantry, or teams are welcome to bring their own. “I am very excited to see the level of enthusiasm people are showing. It’s going to be a very fun and perhaps, bizarre event,” says organizer Jennie MacKenzie.

“It’s always great to see the costumes teams come up with. There’s no way to know what to expect.”

Racing will start at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1 on a closed off section of Queen Street between Bridge and Reid Streets. For more information, call Jennie at 705-652-6062 or visit www.polarfest.ca.
