Lakefield Midget LL win A Championship

by Sherry Nelson

The Midget Lakefield LL team travelled to Wasaga Beach this past weekend for a tournament. Lots of snow and lots of great hockey!

The first game was against Norwich (just outside of Woodstock) and Lakefield won 3-0.

Scoring Lakefield goals were Nathan Hyland (2) and Mitchell Nelson, assists went to Chris Oosting, Daniel Stewart, Lanny Knott, Justin Jeff, Kenny Pipher and Michael Hyrtle.

With a solid effort and another shutout was super star goaltender Tyler Murphy.

In the second game against Wasaga Beach #2 Lakefield won 7-1. Goals were scored by Michael Hyrtle getting a hat trick, Daniel Stewart (unassisted), Austin McIntosh (2) and Nathan Hyland.

Assists went to Mattias Metcalfe, Kenny Pipher, Michael Hyrtle and Nathan Hyland.

The Midgets then qualified for the A final Champions playing the undefeated Wasaga Beach #1.

After the first period action, the game was still 0-0 with both teams giving 100%. With four minutes left in the second period, Wasaga Beach scored. Lakefield headed into the third and final period losing 1-0.

With five minutes left in the third period Nick White scored with an assist by Mattias Metcalfe to tie the game 1-1. With less than four minutes left in the game Nick White blasted a shot from outside the blue line and scored, but the refs then called no goal due to offside play. Still tied at 1-1 with 43 seconds to play team captain Michael Hyrtle scored the winning goal with an assist by Mattias Metcalfe and Austin McIntosh, ending the game with a victorious effort by all of our Lakefield Midgets winning 2-1 and putting the little village of Lakefield on the map again by becoming the A Gold Champions.

Solid net action by Tyler Murphy by winning the MVP of the game. Way to go Chiefs!
