Anchormen more than just pretty faces

True Canadian spirit was overflowing on Queen Street in Lakefield on Saturday for the 5th Annual Running of the Lakefield Pantry Polar Paddle. Embracing a full out snowfall and snow covered roads, eight enthusiastic teams faced off to see who would emerge the fastest.

Teams represented Lakefield IDA Pharmacy, two teams from Lakefield College School, Your Body You, Township of Selwyn Firefighters, the Ice Blazzers, Donoghue’s Wholesale and the Stuff Store.

Competition continued in a double elimination round robin format to determine the winner. It was a very hard fought competition with no team eager to be first out. The last three teams standing were Lakefield College One, The Ice Blazzers and the Stuff Store. After the final rounds of racing, the Stuff Store was the dominant team. The Township of Selwyn Firefighters were presented with the Best Costume Award.

Organizer Jennie MacKenzie of Lakefield Pantry and her husband, John of MacKenzie Woodworks were thrilled with the level of participation in this year’s race and the enthusiasm of the participants and the crowd. “This is a unique event” says Jennie “and we are really excited to see the community come on board to get involved.

We hope the level of participation will continue to grow. It’s winter in Canada, you can’t beat it, so you might as well take it head on and have some fun.

Thanks to Pat, who has volunteered with us every year and to Andrea who jumped in and helped out last minute.”
