LCS welcomed Shelagh Rogers, CBC Radio Host

Lakefield College School welcomed Jack Matthews Fellow Shelagh Rogers of CBC’s The Next Chapter On Tuesday, January 28.

LCS students and staff, along with a group of visiting local school students, were treated to classroom visits and three presentations by Shelia on such topics as storytelling, finding one’s narrative voice and mental health, among others.

“Shelagh Rogers is a famous Canadian broadcast journalist. It is always an honour and a privilege to have someone of her reputation and experience in our school. Shelagh’s compassion, curiosity and passion for Canadian literature, Aboriginal affairs, the CBC, and most of all today, our LCS students, was the true take-away.

“She enjoyed engaging with our students and was moved by their honesty, kindness and courage. Shelagh truly has another story to draw upon after her day at The Grove,” said David Krocker, LCS Curriculum Leader.

Ms. Rogers is an accomplished journalist who has a special interest in Canadian literature and music. Rogers also serves as an honorary justice of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee and has co-edited the book Speaking My Truth: Reflections on Reconciliation and Residential Schools.

Currently the host of CBC’s The Next Chapter, she was awarded the Order of Canada in 2011 for her efforts in “promoting Canada’s rich culture, for her volunteer work in adult literacy, for fighting against the stigma of mental illness, and for pushing for reconciliation.

She is the first-ever Ambassador-at-Large for the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough and sees the canoe as a beautiful symbol of a new relationship between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.
