Midgets win championship in Oshawa tournament

by Sherry Nelson

On the weekend the Lakefield Midget LL travelled to Oshawa to play in the Bob Black Memorial tournament.

The first game played on Saturday was against Tillsonburgh just south of Woodstock with a very exciting game of 1-1, with the solo goal scored by Justin Jeff from the point and assisted by Michael Hyrtle. Excellent saves by Tyler Murphy!

The second game of the day proved to be a very high body contact game against North Middlesex Jr. Stars (near London), with all of the Middlesex team being second and third year players except for three skaters.

The game was tied 1-1 until three minutes left in the third period and Lakefield scored and won 2-1. Goals scored by Michael Hyrtle and Drew Goble and assists by Matthias Metcalfe and Mitchell Nelson.

An early start Sunday morning put us up against Simcoe at 8:00 in the morning and we won 5-0 with Tyler Murphy getting the shut out and goals scored by Nathan Hyland, Michael Hyrtle (2), Drew Goble, Mitchell Nelson. Assists were by Austin McIntosh, Nick White, Hyrtle and Daniel Stewart(2).

After all the points were tallied we qualified for the semi-finals against the Point Edward Blackhawks. The game was tied 1-1 going into the third period and Lakefield scored two minutes in to beat them 2-1.

Goals scored by Michael Hyrtle and Matthias Metcalfe, with assists by Mitchell Nelson ad Kenny Pipher and Murphy doing what he does best in the net!

Lakefield now had moved on the finals and ended up playing Middlesex again for the championship. Lakefield started off strongly by scoring in the first period and Middlesex returned the effort by scoring 40 seconds later, tieing the game 1-1 at the end of the first period.

In the second period Lakefield was short handed and Michael Hyrtle got the break away and scored unassisted with less than two minutes left. Tyler Murphy played strongly the entire time to keep the lead for the team for the end of that period.

Going into the third period with a 2-1 lead for Lakefield, both teams were full on body contact and rubber flying at both goalies. Tyler was bearing down and stopped well over 30 shots rifled at him. Lakefield was able to hold the lead and won the game 2-1!

Goals were scored by Matthias Metcalfe and Michael Hyrtle an assist by Justin Jeff. Hats off to the entire team and coaches for a job well done! The boys should be proud having won the championship.
