Progressive Rehabilitation Award for Lakefield pit
The Lakefield Pit & Lakefield Pit-West Floor operated by CBM Aggregates have earned the prestigious Progressive Rehabilitation Award from the Ontario Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (OSSGA).
The Progressive Rehabilitation Award recognizes outstanding progress in the rehabilitation of extracted portions of active pit or quarry sites.
“CBM Aggregates is committed to achieving a high standard of rehabilitation. A great amount of effort goes in to ensure these projects are completed at, or above the standards set within our site plan,” said Mike Le Breton, Lands Supervisor, CBM Aggregates.
“Rehabilitation is beneficial as it not only naturalizes the property, but also provides connectivity with surrounding landscapes. From an ecological standpoint, rehabilitation is extremely important as it provides a means to create a variety of different habitat types that may, or may not have historically been present. A recent project undertaken in our Lakefield pit saw a twenty acre parcel rehabilitated to agricultural lands.”
The OSSGA is a non-profit industry association representing over 280 sand, gravel, and crushed stone producers and suppliers of valuable industry products and services.
Collectively, its members supply 75 per cent of the approximately 152 million tonnes of aggregate consumed annually in the province to build and maintain Ontario’s infrastructure needs.
OSSGA works in partnership with government and the public to promote a safe and competitive aggregate industry contributing to the creation of strong communities in the province.
“We encourage our members to be sound stewards of the lands on which they operate, and to be engaged and valued members of their community,” said Moreen Miller, CEO of OSSGA.
“All of the award winners have met and exceeded those expectations, and demonstrated that aggregate extraction is a responsible interim land use.”
