Chiefs repeat as COJHL champions
by Robert Campbell
The Lakefield Fitzsimmons Towing and Repair Chiefs are back-to-back champions.
It took just nine playoff games for the Chiefs to repeat as the Central Ontario Junior Hockey League Champions after knocking off the Port Perry Mojacks in four straight games and losing only one to the Uxbridge Bruins on the way to the title.
It is the Chiefs’ ninth league championship since they became a junior C team in 1980-81. They also won two junior D championships in 1977-78 and 1978-79.
It came to an end for the Bruins last Friday night in Lakefield when the Chiefs handed them a 6-1 loss to claim the championship. Leading the way with four points each were captain Nathan Larson and linemate Travis Brault picking up two goals and two assists each.
Jordan Walsh and William Sullivan rounded out the scoring. Assists went to Connor Blair with two, Eric Oosting, Ryan Anderson, Jessie Gregory and Derek Manley. Zac Wainman was in net for the win.
The Chiefs now take on the Empire League Champion Picton Pirates on the road to the Clarence Schmaltz Cup for the second year in a row after losing to the Pirates last year in a hard fought series that went seven games.
The Chiefs hope to take it one step further this year. The first game of the series will be held Thursday in Picton. Game two will be held Saturday at the Lakefield-Smith Community Centre and game three will return to Picton Sunday.
Game four will be played in the Chiefs’ regular Tuesday time slot and if necessary game five will be in Picton next Thursday.
Game six will run next Saturday and if the series goes seven games, the finale would be played March 30 in Picton. All game times are 7:30 p.m.
