Children’s Book Event celebrates the 20th Anniversary of Lakefield Literary Festival
by Beverley Haun
If you have young children or grandchildren, mark Saturday, July 12 on your calendar!
That is the day that two acclaimed Canadian children’s story tellers, writer Sheree Fitch and illustrator Werner Zimmermann, will be returning to Lakefield to help celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Lakefield Literary Festival.
They will be performing from their work in the Children’s Tent at Cenotaph Park. It’s at 9:30 a.m. and admission is free, although donations are appreciated.
Sheree Fitch has published books for adults and young adults, but she is best known for her writing for children. She describes herself as a “lipslippery fool” when she works with her acclaimed poetry for kids.
She plans to entertain on Saturday, July 12 with several of her classic books: Mable Murple, Sleeping Dragons All Around, Toes in my Nose as well as her newest book, Singily Skipping Along.
Werner Zimmermann is an award winning children’s book illustrator who grew up in farming country in Southern Ontario.
He is known for his animated and interactive presentations for children and the rumour is that this year he will be working with chickens!
He has illustrated many books, including a series called Farmer Joe (hence the chickens) and A Porcupine in a Pine Tree which has become a Christmas classic. His work is saturated in bright colours that bring the stories they accompany vividly to life.
If you would like to read any of the award winning books written and illustrated by Fitch and Zimmermann to your young ones, or have your older children reading their books on their own in preparation for attending the Children’s Tent, they are available at Happenstance Books and Yarn in Lakefield.
