Lakefield’s Sea Venturers head to Newfoundland

by Herb Reinhart

The flat earth society believes that Newfoundland is positioned at one of the four corners of the world. Teetering on the edge of the planet. They say that beyond its jagged cliffs and crashing waves, little exists. Scouts Canada is inviting Venturer Scouts to experience what life is like at the end of the earth. Base camp for the National Venturer Scout Jamboree is nestled on the edge of Terra Nova National Park on the eastern coast of Newfoundland.

I’m sure they had us at “Journey to the edge of the World”. Saying “Newfoundland will test your tenacity and challenge you to be stronger, faster, and braver than you have ever been before.” Promises of Biking, Hiking, Canoeing, Sea Kayaking, White Water Rafting and rock climbing.

On August 1, 2014, four 1st Lakefield Sea Venturers, and one of their Advisors are making the trek to Newfoundland in search of adventure and challenge. After all “Challenge” is the Venturer Scout motto. The Venturers ran numerous fundraisers throughout the year to help with the costs. It’s sure to be an experience of a lifetime. I know I’m very excited about my first time on “the rock”.

Imagine hundreds of national and international 14 to 17 year old co-ed youth roughing it for a week. Bring only what they can carry in. And since we’re flying in and baggage weight is an issue, we are packing as we would be for a wilderness hike. With the exception of food, thank goodness. It will be provided. We will however have to prepare the food and so will be taking stoves and kitchen utensils, as well as building our own kitchen shelter using tarps, wooden bow staves and lashing.

All our activities and interactions during this amazing week to come will serve to foster independence and reinforce teamwork. An experience sure to change us all. None of which could have happened if it were not for 1st Lakefield’s group commissioner and everyone of the parents. Special Kudos goes out to them.
