Horticultural Society Antique and Flower Show and Sale

Organized by the Lakefield and District Horticultural Society, the Lakefield Antique and Flower Show (& Sale) is being held August 13 and 14 at the Lakefield-Smith Community Centre, situated on the banks of the beautiful Otonabee River in Lakefield.

Not only will the Show be bigger and better than ever, it also provides visitors with the opportunity to visit the lovely village of Lakefield.

Antique dealers from all over the area bring their wares to display and sell. Many dealers have been coming for years and a few have been to the show since the beginning 36 years ago. There will be many new dealers this year.

Over 40 Antique dealers have been invited to share their wonderful collections of antique furniture, silverware, tools, memorabilia, glassware, china etc. Favourite antiques of the visitors to the show include furniture, silverware, jewellery and many other collectibles. It is a truly outstanding show, organized by amazing volunteers, which thousands of people have enjoyed over the years.

In addition to the antique displays, floral designers show off their works of floral art. Specimen flowers, potted plants, and photographs are all part of the show.

This year the floral arrangements are following a “Kawartha Kaleidoscope” theme with categories such as “Garden Harvest,” “Selwyn Shores,” Marsh Magic’” and “A Walk in the Woods.” As well there is a photography section, judged by a local professional photographer for members who love to keep long-lasting memories of their flowers and gardens. The Society has chosen a theme of “Elements” for the photo competition, with titles such as “Blowing in the Wind,” “Still Waters,,” “Down to Earth,” and “Ring of Fire.”

In addition to Horticultural Society members showing off their talents, there is an opportunity for non-members to enter the competition as well. The arrangement for this competition needs to follow the theme of “Anything goes - a design in an antique container.” There will be two categories - one for adults and one for children. So everyone is included and “Anything Goes!” Entries must be in place between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 12 at the Lakefield Smith-Community Centre.

And don’t forget, there is also a terrific plant sale! Local growers bring plants and society members offer advice and sales of some interesting perennial plants. Get there early for the best selection. Gardeners are always on hand to offer free advice and tips through-out the entire show.

The Antique Sale and Flower Show is always a huge success. It is very popular with the public, and is the Society’s primary fund-raiser, allowing the organization to continue its important and sometimes-costly volunteer projects, including filling the Lakefield gardens and streets with beautiful flowers.

This Show is held in the second week of August each year at the Lakefield-Smith Community Centre. Admission is $5.00. The show runs Wednesday, August 13, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Thursday, August 14, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Lakefield and District Horticultural Society is a non-profit group which raises funds through its annual Antique and Flower show to beautify the Village of Lakefield and to bring speakers to monthly meetings. All regular meetings at the Marshland Centre are free and guests are always welcome.
